WWWinterthur workshop

Space&matter is teaching at the WWWinterthur workshop of the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture. During this week a vacant office building near de Zuidas is filled up with fresh ideas and new initiatives. Eight different groups totaling 120 students are generating concepts to fully exploit the potential of this abandoned building. In our group (private space) we focus on the buildings courtyard. Europan 11 honorable mention

space&matter received an honorable mention for the Europan entry 'Cable car parking' Dubrovnik. The project proposes to relocate the proposed parking garage uphill and use the existing cable car to connect it to the Old city. The Croatian jury have not yet published their report. We will post it online as soon as we can.

AV huis construction

Construction of the AV huis is moving rapidly. The concrete structure is put up and the facadepanels are halfway done. We expect the concrete construction work to be completed next week. We will post updates of the proces frequently so tune in once in a while.

This week space&matter participates in a research lab at NL. Reset; the International Biennial Maastricht concerning vacancy and transformation. We were asked to join in on a session about the consequences and potential of the large scale A2 highway construction-project in the city of Maastricht; 'the green carpet'. What will happen in the time before the ambitious plans are realized in 2027. How do can the 'in between' be used to boost activity and vitalize the surrounding area?

Glimpses moves to PICNIC

After a very successful show at ARCAM this summer, the exhibition Glimpses (on the sustainable future of Amsterdam and New York) will move to the 'PICNIC Festival', an annual three-day event that blurs the lines between creativity, science, technology and business to explore new solutions in the spirit of co-creation.This year’s theme is Urban Futures, with a focus on sustainability, infrastructure, society, design and media. The PICNIC Festival 2011 takes place from 14 to 16 September at NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam North.

On board with Schoonschip

The collective building group (CPO) Schoonschip is planing to start a sustainable and floating living-community in Amsterdam. In collaboration with Duurzaam Drijvend Wonen, space&matter is working on a feasibility study for the group that consists of 25 to 35 households. We organize workshops to get a grip on the groups ambition, we visualize their ideas, we advice them on spatial matters and design a master-plan for the floating cluster of dwellings. In 2010 the Schoonschip initiative was nominated for the P-Nuts award (sustainable energy award). They made a short film in dutch to explain their ambitions.

Construction has started!

We are very exited to announce that ground has been broken at the construction site of the AVhuis in Breda. The buildings foundation is due to be completed within the next two weeks. After the summer break, all three floors and concrete facades will be erected within eight weeks.
The AVhuis is a multi-tenant building for the Audio Visual industry. It is part of the Triple O campus in Breda and will be the first building on site to have an A+ energy label.

Glimpses NY Amsterdam

Space&matter will kick off their glimpse 'Dwelling' at the Provada on June 7th at 12:00. This event is hosted by Proper Stock (details here).

The opening of the "Glimpses" event is near. NY will launch on June 7th by a lecture of Ton Venhoeven. The dutch edition, organized by Arcam, will start June 17th and is on show for one month.

Glimpses of New York and Amsterdam in 2040 presents an exchange program between the Center for Architecture in New York and the Amsterdam Centre for Architecture (ARCAM). The organizations commissioned architects and landscape architects in both cities to contemplate the “future of the future,” with an emphasis on five basic necessities for living: breathing, eating, making, moving and dwelling. Each glimpse is a powerful statement on the future of daily life in New York and Amsterdam. Combined, they provide insight into the way in which the cities may address long-term planning issues.

Water voor Wonen on show in Barcelona

Our Water voor Wonen project will star in the International Architecture Festival EME3 in Barcelona starting this june. The festivals theme is: “work in progress: global problems, local solutions”. It will be held from june 30th until july 3rd in various venues in the city center. Our project will be on show in the mercado exposition.

SAM @ sub.40

This May, space&matter will kick of the lecture series sub.40 in Kassel. Sub.40 is the new discussion platform of architecture, urbanism and landscape architecture at the university of Kassel. With the topic 'Wenn nicht jetzt, wo dann?', it is focused at the need for a new self perception of architects and planners in a rapidly changing world.
Other offices that will present their work and visions in this series are: one fine day, Daniel Fernandez Pascual, something fantastic and umschichten. Our lecture will be on May 17th and starts at 7:45 pm.

Glimpses New York & Amsterdam

Space&matter is invited to contribute to the Glimpses exhibition. This June, five New York and five Dutch firms will present their visions on the future of New York and Amsterdam in a parallel exhibition in both cities. Participating New York firms: W architecture, Work-AC, SO-IL, dlandstudio, interboro. Participating Dutch firms: Delva Landscape Architects, Van Bergen Kopla, Barcode Architects, Fabric, space&matter.
‘Glimpses, Amsterdam & New York, an exchange of sustainable ideas’ is a collaborative project between ARCAM and the AIA Center for Architecture in New York in which the focus is on the exchange of knowledge regarding the sustainable future of the two cities. The aim of the project is to create an exchange platform that can provide a stimulus for the international professional debate surrounding the theme and can lead to new, innovative developments in both cities.

Space and matter is published in the book 'Best Practice #excellente #e-cultuur' published by the Virtueel Platform. The article by Martijn de Waal 'De rol van digitale media in stedelijk ontwerp' (The role of digital media in urban design) shows examples of how our office researches ways to incorporate virtual tools in design processes to manage multitudes and to encourage collectiveness.

Virtueel Platform is the sector institute for e-culture in the Netherlands. Its mission is to stimulate and strengthen cultural innovation by sharing knowledge about e-culture and increasing its visibility and scope.

Martijn de Waal is a writer and researcher. Together with Michiel de Lange, he co-founded The Mobile City; a research initiative and international network concerned with the role of digital technology in urban culture and urban design.

Streets of Amsterdam

In March space&matter will lecture about temporary space-use and the social benefits of the collective realm at the international student workshop 'Streets of Amsterdam' organized by a collaboration between Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Fachhochschule Bielefeld and the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University of Istanbul. Students have to weeks to work on an assignment focused around the Kattenburg neighborhood in Amsterdam. As guest critics we will also be present at the presentation of their final projects.

In February 2011 the maHKU (Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design) invited space&matter to organize a workshop for the masterclass of the interior design and public space department.
Dutch cities are littered with innumerable parking structures of the lowest architectural standards. Our workshop focuses on these inner city parking garages and specifically on their unused potential of cultural relevance. After analyzing a parking garage on the Jaarbeursplein in Utrecht, participants will develop spatial strategies for exploiting the sociocultural potential of this neglected urban realm.

Last week, space&matter was well represented at the 54th World Congress of the IFHP (International Federation of Housing and Planning) in Porto Alegre, Brazil. On monday we were granted 2nd place in the Young Professional Award with our 'Voor(t)zet' (New Fronts) project. Tuesday november 16th Tjeerd Haccou lectured for an international audience, on the possibilities of using online social media for community building and urban planning. You can find a self explanatory version of this presentation here.
The theme of the Congress was 'Building Communities in the City of the Future'. The main issues during the three-day congress were:

This weekend the 3rd MediaCity conference takes place at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. The conference will investigate how new media re-defines social settings and urban spaces and how they influence architecture as well as media art & design in urban contexts, thus constituting new social and cultural practices. On sunday, Marthijn Pool presents his published C@rchitecture project 'the architecture-infrastructure synergy'. This project shows how socio-psychological aspects of infrastructure can be beneficial to architecture and the experience of the city. With a digital design tool he integrates the collaboration of multiple disciplines and optimizes the design process.

WeBuild, the next step

Thursday the 7th of October space&matter signed the consortium agreement to collaboratively develop our winning WeBuild concept into a feasible product. WeBuild is an integrated platform that bundles the knowledge of Red Concepts, Inno Concept Bouwen (ICB) and space&matter. The open source platform will optimally match a new dwelling to specific consumers preferences. By integrating processes using Building Information Modeling (BIM), the planning & design efficiency is optimized while error cost are minimized. This adds value to the individual house as well as to the architectural quality and diversity in the city.

Collective Intelligence Design Workshop @ TUWien

For the Advances in Architectural Geometry Conference (AAG 2010) in Vienna, Marthijn Pool will host a two day workshop. The goal is to establish the awareness that collaborative design is a discipline in itself and that it requires the correct mindset to operate efficiently. In the workshop Marthijn's vision on the design team operating as a distributed network of agents, will be experimentally implemented. The collective intelligence within the expert group results in a design that exceeds the sum of its parts since each individual is complementary to it's team member.

Space&matter is invited to present its work at West Arch in the Ludwig Forum in Aachen, Germany. West Arch presents a snapshot of a young experimental architect’s scene in West Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. West Arch traces networks and structures and establishes new links in a multi-faceted supporting program. West Arch discusses the conditions of production that young architects have to deal with in different local contexts and gives an insight in the way how a young European generation of architects work.

The current situation on the market as well as the ubiquity of digital means of communication influence the operation of young architecture firms. They work in teams or networks, they are not afraid of immersing in neighboring disciplines and they occupy niches beyond the classic fields of work. Their effect is trans-regional, often international and they take advantage of new forms of communication such as Skype to facilitate co-operation over long distances. Woensdag 30 juni werd in Almere de combinatie space&matter en Red Concepts uitgeroepen als winnaar van de ideeën prijsvraag 'zo wil ik wonen'. De prijsvraag, georganiseerd door de NEPROM, BNA en 'Nederland wordt anders', had als doel nieuwe ideeën te genereren omtrent consumentgericht bouwen. De jury bestaande uit oa. Marlies Rohmer en voorgezeten door Mirjam van ‘t Veld, schrijft in haar rapport: “Pick ’n Place wint vanwege de nieuwe dynamiek die tot stand wordt gebracht door ontwerpers uit te dagen architectuur te realiseren die consumenten aanspreekt. Ook van ontwikkelaars vraagt dit een andere houding. Marktwerking met een centrale rol voor consumenten komt op deze manier sterk naar voren. De inzending is sterk qua consumentgerichtheid.”

Space&matter was chosen as winner in the zowilikwonen competition, organized by NEPROM, BNA and Nederland wordt anders.
Collaborations of project developers and architects were asked to jointly submit new concepts for consumer-involvement in the housing-market. We teamed up with Red Concepts and designed a new building and design process that introduces design based marketmechanism. The jury was pleased with the strongly consumer oriented approach and the new dynamics in the design process.

Appreciated the achievements in the fields of visual arts, literature, music, film, theater, architecture and media arts. The prize winners should generally not be older than 35 years old and must be accompanied by birth, residence or her work with the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Sensible development in Waterland

Based on our Water voor Wonen project, the combination of housing corporation Monnickendam (AWM) and USP property asked space&matter to jointly create a vision for housing in the Waterland region. The region is one of Hollands most picturesque landscapes with great historical and cultural value. Accordingly, new development asks for a conscientious planning approach with respect to nature and the authenticity of site. We are very excited to contribute to safeguarding this precious context by designing a sensible development-approach.

"Rest in GreenPeace" on show in London

Space&matter has been invited to exhibit its entry “Rest in Greenpeace” as part of the international competition Heathrow Airport Contest. In January 2010, Greenpeace launched an architectural competition to stimulate ideas for ways to fortify the Airplot in case a new government allows BAA’s third runway plans to proceed. Effectively, the brief was to come up with a 21st century fortress – capable of resisting BAA’s bulldozers and stopping construction of the runway. The jury specially commended the design ’Rest in Greenpeace’ for outstanding conceptual idea and tactic. The future of architecture

Space&matter was asked to contribute to the April issue of 'de Architect'. For the theme 'Memo's for the coming 40 years' we wrote a column about the current state of affairs in our business. Jury Assessment of our Europan entry 'De Voor(t)zet'
"Connecting the housing to the car park creates a successful integration of the inner courtyard with the architecture. The proposals for renovation are promising, but will also be accompanied by considerable costs. Because of this, no matter how appealing, the plan overshoots the mark."

With our plan we deliberately aimed for a cost effective solution. Therefore we are convinced the plan could have been carried out within strict budgetary constraints. If only we got the chance to proof it... : (

Sascha Glasl & Tjeerd J. Haccou won the first prize in the DROOM.NH competition with their entry 'Water voor Wonen' (water for dwelling). The announcement took place at the MIPIM in Cannes.
